City of Sultans

Seat of the ruling Al Busaid dynasty since the 18th century, Muscat is, undoubtedly, one of the most attractive cities in the entire Gulf region. The old town, the entrance to its port guarded by the twin fortresses of Mirani and Jalali perched high on rocky outcrops, is squeezed between its small natural harbour and the steep surrounding hills. History is everywhere - in the old walled city and the souk; by the harbour where the names of visiting 17th century warships were inscribed on the rocks and may still be seen; or amongst the elegantly balustraded houses of the 18th century merchants. The city's excellent National Heritage Museum, Natural History Museum and Oil Exhibition give fascinating insights into a variety of aspects of Oman's long history and recent development.
The souks of Muscat - and other Omani towns - are endlessly fascinating. Whilst electronic goods, cameras, watches and other hi-tech gadgetry are good value compared with many other parts of the world, it is in silver jewellery and antiques that Oman offers the finest bargains. To make the most of you visit we recommend the following excursions. You can discover Oman's heritage by taking the Fascinating Forts tour to Nizwa, Bahla and Jabrin and see the date palm groves at Al Hamra oasis. Or you may wish to explore the reefs and marine life of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea with our Dive Oman arrangements.
